but before Turkey ...
Cyprus
Quick reminder - Cyprus is south of Turkey and a couple time zones less than halfway around the world from San Francisco. When you travel there, this fact becomes quite apparent.
The most familiar part of the journey was my BART ride to SFO. The unusual part of the ride was the 5:25am departure time. I woke up just after 4am to get ready - warning - there's an upcoming math problem.
The first flight's destination was JFK airport in New York City - well, close. There was a great view of New York City as we approached for landing. It looked to me like the traffic was flowing on the George Washington bridge. The JFK airport has a series of separated terminals, so I had to wait in a long security line. It would seem like 2 hours between flights would be sufficient - it was - but just barely.
The second flight's destination was Vienna. One of the highlights of the trip, when I should have been sleeping, was dawn over London. Arrival and departure gates at Vienna airport were close to each other in the same building - easy transfer. I didn't need the 2 hours between flights there at all, but it helped me catch up on some e-mail.
The third flight's destination was my final objective - Larnaca, Cyprus. The plane landed at 2:30 and by 3pm I was in my host's car, enjoying an overview ride through the city. I rented a spare room from him for two nights. As it turns out, he used to be a high school science teacher. So, we talked education and politics at length. We walked around the Cypriot village where he lives and stopped in a Greek taverna for a little refreshment. It was 9pm when my head hit the pillow.
Now the math problem. How long had I been awake? I didn't really sleep on the plane. Cyprus is 9 hours ahead of San Francisco.
Here's the view from my first host's house:
